Our History
Cornwall Stodart is one of Melbourne's most established legal
practices and has a rich history dating back to 1891. Our heritage
and the values exemplified by our founders have helped define our
firm and the values we hold today.
Our firm's founders, Harry Sugden and Frank Cornwall, showed
determination and perseverance in establishing the firm at a time
when Melbourne was slowly recovering from a severe depression. In
addition, they showed foresight and progressiveness early in the
practice when, in 1905, they employed the first female law graduate
to enter the profession in Australia, Miss Grata 'Flos' Grieg.
Throughout the Great Depression and World War II, our firm was
carried solely by two partners, William 'Leo' Bryant and Albert
'Bertie' Black. Determination and persistence to flourish was also
illustrated in World War II when office space became scarce.
Despite continually being beaten to premises by others, eventually
an office was secured - Ludstone Chambers, 352 Collins Street,
Melbourne.
