Josh Gurgiel, Seasonal Clerk, December 2009
I have thoroughly enjoyed completing a seasonal clerkship at Cornwall Stodart. This experience opened my eyes to the realities of working in a law firm, and gave me an opportunity to apply my university studies in a practical manner.

I feel privileged to have been coached and mentored by such a
supportive and experienced team of lawyers, who made every effort
to impart their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of my
development. Cornwall Stodart provided the ideal working
environment, and this clerkship confirmed my desire to further my
legal training.
My first rotation was in the Commercial Litigation practice
group. I was fortunate to be placed under the guidance of Paul
Buitendag (supervisor) and Katerina Poulakis ('buddy'), who were
always extremely approachable and interested in my wellbeing. They
provided helpful advice on any query I had and ensured my
integration into the firm was smooth and not intimidating. I
particularly appreciated being invited to attend a client meeting
with them, which was interesting and gave me insight into life as a
lawyer.
Commercial Litigation was an ideal practice group in which to
commence my learning, as the fast-paced and urgent nature of the
work put me in the 'deep end' from the outset. Under careful
guidance, support and observation, I was given interesting and
sometimes challenging work that tested my research and time
management skills. I was privy to a wide range of matters, from
which I gained significant knowledge, and can comfortably say that
litigation is an area I would like to learn more about.
I completed my second rotation in Corporate & Commercial,
specifically working in Intellectual Property. I was taught how to
conduct thorough trade mark searches and saw first hand the
realities (and sometimes difficulties) associated with the legal
system. I was also exposed to a wider range of commercial issues
beyond IP, which enhanced my experience. My 'buddy', Anna Smits,
made an incredible effort to mentor me and encouraged the
development of my skills. Her dedication and proactive approach to
furthering my learning was greatly appreciated.
I was lucky enough to sit in with my supervisor, Nicole
Stevens-Warton, during this rotation. Nicole's warm and supportive
nature helped foster my confidence in approaching my work, and she
was never too busy to assist me. It was inspiring to witness her
work ethic. I truly enjoyed my time in Corporate & Commercial,
and it reaffirmed my interest in Intellectual Property.
I particularly appreciated the warm culture and strong sense of
family evident in the Cornwall Stodart office. I was amazed at the
willingness of all lawyers and legal assistants to offer their
support and guidance. This culture is a testament to the values the
firm advocates, and played a key role in my enjoyment of my
clerkship and helped me reach my potential throughout.
My clerkship with Cornwall Stodart surpassed my expectations and
I am extremely grateful to all involved for making it such a
positive learning experience.
