Traineeships

Why choose Cornwall Stodart?

In line with the firm's emphasis on developing our people to enhance their success, we are genuinely committed to developing our trainees.

We understand the importance of providing you with a breadth of work and opportunities to allow you to discover your area of expertise. Hence we expose you to all practice groups within the firm, giving you the opportunity to develop through practical 'hands on' experience, as well as the opportunity to explore the areas of law that appeal to you.

Our medium size means that, as a trainee, you will not be lost among numbers. Our culture ensures you have the opportunity and accessibility to liaise with and learn from our partners on a regular basis.

As a trainee at Cornwall Stodart you will have:

  • direct access to partners and other senior lawyers, learning from their wealth of experience
  • a variety of work in a number of specialist areas
  • active involvement with clients, participating in meetings and working on specific files
  • regular training sessions, including leadership and professional development
  • ongoing feedback and review on your progress
  • monthly feedback sessions with other trainees
  • training and development in various practice management disciplines, such as marketing and business development, file management, financial analysis and general management skills to assist you in your long term career.

Traineeships at Cornwall Stodart

Following the commencement of the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2008 in July 2008, Cornwall Stodart made an ongoing commitment to offer Supervised Workplace Training (SWT) at a time when many other law firms decided it was 'all too hard'. We believe the high quality program provided by us nurtures our trainees to develop to their full potential, both professionally and personally.

Rotations and Training

Your training will incorporate the compulsory areas, skills and values required as part of the Traineeship Competency Standards. In line with the Traineeship Rules, competencies requiring training by an accredited PLT provider, such as Ethics and Professional Responsibility, will be provided externally as part of our program.

Your traineeship will see you rotate through all of our practice groups and be exposed to all areas of the firm. The program is designed to ensure that you:

  • demonstrate competence in all of the elements required under the Traineeship Rules
  • gain broad experience as a commercial lawyer
  • have the opportunity to gain a sound knowledge of all practice groups
  • gain exposure to a variety of lawyers at all levels and therefore experience a range of interpersonal and management styles
  • gain exposure to our broad client base
  • gain exposure to industries in which we have expertise
  • are provided with structured mentoring, coaching and development.

Induction Program

As a graduate or trainee, you will be provided with an extensive induction program over your first few weeks with the firm.

The induction program will provide you with introductions to your colleagues, our systems and procedures, our library and research facilities, and our document database and precedents. You will also be provided with an introductory session on each of the practice groups and areas of expertise - ie the type of work we do, who our clients are and other key information.

By no means does your induction signify the end of your introduction into Cornwall Stodart. We have dedicated people on hand to answer your questions, assist you and make you feel comfortable.

In addition, you will participate in various training sessions throughout your traineeship as required. Before the commencement of each new rotation, you will receive practice-group specific training to assist you with settling in effectively.

Ongoing Learning

Apart from on-the-job learning, we also have a comprehensive Leadership and Development Program to help all staff reach their full potential. You will also be encouraged to attend weekly legal professional development seminars as part of the Enhancing Success Program (ESP). These are in-house seminars supervised by senior associates and partners, as well as external presenters, on various areas of law or legislative change.

As part of your traineeship program you will attend monthly feedback sessions with the Information and Development Manager, the Human Resources Manager and fellow trainees. These sessions allow you to get a 'taste' of upcoming rotations, share your experiences with colleagues and build on your development in a proactive and structured forum.

"I really enjoyed my experience as a trainee at Cornwall Stodart. The traineeship program is extremely well organised and I am very lucky to have been given the guidance and support of several staff, who have the responsibility of making our transition from students to full-time employees as smooth and enjoyable as possible."
